Azure Storage Mover

Azure Storage Mover is a fully managed migration orchestration service that moves on-premises SMB and NFS file shares into Azure Blob and Azure file endpoints. It runs lightweight agent appliances at the source, centralizes projects, endpoints, and migration jobs in Azure, automates scanning, transfer, and cutover, and provides job-level monitoring without operating custom transfer infrastructure.

Differences vs Huawei

Boundary and data model differ. Azure Storage Mover targets file-share-to-Object-Storage (Blob) and file endpoints via source-side agent appliances, with project/job and endpoint abstractions. Huawei OMS targets object-to-OBS migration from third-party S3-compatible or HTTP/HTTPS-accessible object stores; it is not a file-share-to-OBS pipeline. For SMB/NFS sources, Huawei pairs OMS with OBS Parallel File System or SFS, plus self-managed transfer tooling (e.g., rclone, MGC), since OMS itself ingests object-listed sources, not mounted file shares.

Operating and scaling model differ. Storage Mover runs managed agent appliances the operator deploys near the source, with resumable transfers and cutover handled by the service; the operator manages VMs hosting the agent. OMS is serverless from the operator side: tasks run in Huawei Cloud against listed object prefixes, support task splitting, resumable transmission, traffic limiting, and metadata/hash validation, but require the source to be reachable over HTTP/HTTPS from Huawei Cloud, which affects egress and source-side network planning. Scaling for SMB/NFS bulk ingestion is not a native OMS path.

Source compatibility, integration, and pricing differ. Storage Mover supports listed NAS/file servers and writes to Blob with no additional service fee beyond compute/storage/network; OMS catalogs public-cloud and self-built object sources, integrates with OBS and SMN for notifications, and is billed by migrated data volume plus source egress and OBS requests. Migration Center (MgC) is Huawei's broader one-stop migration platform that wraps OMS for object workloads but does not add native SMB/NFS-to-OBS file transfer parity.

Migration to Huawei

Assess the source first. Confirm whether the workload is truly file shares (SMB/NFS) or already object data. If the source is object storage on another public cloud, map it to OMS with OBS as the target. If the source is SMB/NFS, Huawei has no direct Storage Mover equivalent; plan a composed pattern using a self-managed transfer host (e.g., rclone) into OBS Parallel File System or SFS Turbo, with OMS only if you first stage the file data into an object-listed source.

Plan target selection and durability. Choose OBS Standard for hot object data or OBS Parallel File System for POSIX-like access; map Azure Blob tiers to OBS Standard, Infrequent Access, and Archive, and recreate lifecycle, versioning, KMS encryption, and bucket policies. For SMB-replacement access semantics, evaluate SFS Turbo or OBS Parallel File System with MGC for orchestration, paging, and governance; validate region availability and quotas before cutover.

Execute data and config migration. For object-to-OBS paths, create OMS migration tasks with source AK/SK or public endpoints, configure HTTPS in transit, KMS encryption at rest, prefix/file lists, time filters, traffic limits, and task splitting; run incremental sync tasks to capture deltas. For file-share-to-OBS paths that OMS does not natively cover, run a scripted transfer with checksums and incremental runs, capturing metadata (timestamps, permissions) separately since OMS does not preserve file ACLs for non-object sources.

Validate and re-baseline the cost model. Run object-level integrity checks (OMS metadata/hash verification) and reconcile counts and bytes; perform a final incremental sync and a cutover window with DNS or application repointing. Recalculate TCO: Azure bills storage capacity, transactions, retrieval, and transfer, while Huawei bills OBS storage, requests, retrieval/replication, cross-region traffic, and source-cloud egress; include peak request volume, retention period, and interconnect traffic, and account for the self-managed transfer host cost that Storage Mover would otherwise have removed.
