Azure BareMetal Infrastructure provides dedicated, non-virtualized bare metal instance stamps certified for specialized enterprise workloads (notably SAP HANA) that cannot run on virtualized cloud. Offered in 30+ SKUs spanning 2- to 24-socket systems with up to 24 TB RAM, it injects isolated NFS/iSCSI/FC storage and VLANs into an Azure VNet via ExpressRoute, with a consultative provisioning model and BYOL operating system and applications.

Differences vs Huawei

Azure BareMetal is a workload-certified stamp product: Microsoft pre-provisions compute, shared enterprise storage fabric (NFS, iSCSI, Fiber Channel, NVMe-oF), and isolated VLANs inside an Azure VNet, reachable only through ExpressRoute with no direct internet path. Huawei BMS is a self-service catalog product purchased through the ECS/BMS console, integrated with EVS disks, VPC security groups, EIPs, and Cloud Eye on standard public cloud networking. Architects must treat Azure's closed, consultatively-delivered stamp as a different operating model rather than a like-for-like flavor match.

Scaling, HA, and isolation boundaries differ materially. Azure BareMetal stamps support availability-zone placement for multi-site active-active, scale-out clusters with failed-node fencing, and up to 1 PB/tenant of shared all-flash storage at 1.2 M IOPS, but the customer retains full responsibility for HA/DR design. Huawei BMS scaling is generally additive (new flavors) with EVS shared disks and CBR/SDRS for resilience; there is no equivalent certified, storage-fabric-delivered stamp, so HA topology, fencing, and replication must be re-architected on native VPC/EVS/CBR primitives.

Operational responsibility split and licensing differ. Both are single-tenant and BYOL for OS and third-party software, with the provider owning hardware; however, Azure explicitly assigns OS provisioning to Microsoft and backup/DR/security/licensing to the customer, while Huawei BMS expects the customer to also drive OS image selection and lifecycle via the console or open APIs/SDKs. Tenant isolation in Azure is enforced across network, storage, and compute layers in a dedicated stamp; in Huawei BMS isolation comes from dedicated physical hosts plus VPC and security-group controls.

Migration paths and tooling parity differ. Azure BareMetal relies on Microsoft field consultation and has no self-service migration tool for stamp relocations; Huawei offers MGC/OMS/SMS for VM-level migration into ECS but not for bare-metal instance relocation. No automated Azure BareMetal to Huawei BMS migration exists; the path is a manual rebuild-and-replatform exercise layered on Direct Connect, image rebuild, and storage replication.

Migration to Huawei

Start with workload classification and target selection. Azure BareMetal Instances are SKUs certified for specialized workloads (primarily SAP HANA, plus select SQL and enterprise apps); in Huawei Cloud the closest equivalents are BMS for general bare-metal needs and, for SAP HANA specifically, Huawei-certified BMS HANA flavors plus DeC if dedicated cloud isolation is required. Validate flavor parity for socket count, memory, local disk, NIC bandwidth, and supported RHEL/SLES OS versions before committing, since Azure's largest 24-socket/24 TB SKUs may not have an exact Huawei match in every region.

Plan data, image, and network migration manually because no automated Azure-to-Huawei bare-metal path exists. Rebuild the OS from a supported Huawei public or private image (BYOL), replicate block data over Direct Connect using CBR, DRS, or SDRS, and reconstitute shared storage topologies that depended on Azure's NFS/FC fabric onto shared EVS disks or SFS Turbo. Re-establish VPC, subnets, security groups, and Direct Connect to mirror the previous ExpressRoute private connectivity, discarding Azure-only VLAN concepts.

Validate performance and HA before cutover. Use Cloud Eye and AOM to confirm CPU, memory, disk IOPS, and NIC latency meet workload requirements, run application-level benchmarks, and rehearse failover for any active-active or fencing cluster previously built on Azure BareMetal availability zones. Confirm RTO/RPO targets with CBR backups and SDRS replication, and schedule the cutover with a rollback window since the live migration harness does not cover bare metal.

Recalculate TCO and account for gaps. Azure bills per BareMetal instance stamp plus managed storage fabric and ExpressRoute, with workload BYOL; Huawei bills BMS runtime, EVS storage, bandwidth/traffic, and optional CBR/TMS management add-ons. Re-estimate cost under peak load, retention period, and cross-region or Direct Connect traffic, and document residual gaps such as certified workload portfolios, native FC/NVMe-oF fabrics, and availability-zone stamp semantics that may require architecture changes or vendor engagement before production migration.
