Amazon WorkSpaces is a managed DaaS offering that provisions persistent Windows or Linux virtual desktops from a directory-backed control plane, billed per-user hourly or monthly with predefined bundles (Value/Standard/Performance/Power). Desktops are launched from AWS-hosted images, joined to Simple AD/AD Connector or a customer-managed AD, and accessed through WorkSpaces clients with streaming protocols, user profiles (WorkDocs/FSx), and volume encryption handled by AWS.

Differences vs Huawei

Workspace is Huawei Cloud's managed cloud desktop (DaaS) service built on the in-house Huawei Delivery Protocol (HDP), with Windows images and a control plane exposed via Huawei Cloud APIs and console. Unlike the AWS WorkSpaces per-hour bundle model priced per user-hour or monthly bundle with Value/Standard/Performance/Power tiers, Huawei Workspace is sold in spec tiers (Flexus monthly-hour packages, Enterprise, Ultimate, Performance) plus Windows licensing on Windows Server images. Directory integration centers on Huawei Cloud AD/identity federation rather than AWS Simple AD/AD Connector, and APIs/data model are not AWS-WorkSpaces compatible; expect to re-spec images, users, and policies rather than migrate via API parity.

Scaling and HA differ: AWS WorkSpaces are single-desktop persistent instances within a VPC/region with WorkSpaces Pool for elastic non-persistent tiers, while Huawei Workspace offers desktop pools and pooled desktops under its own management, with capacity quotas scoped to a single region and the local SLAs Huawei publishes per region. Operational responsibility remains split—Huawei manages infrastructure and HDP delivery, the customer manages images, AD, policies, user assignment—so cross-region DR, geographic placement, and interconnect (Direct Connect/VPN vs. Huawei DC/VPN) must be re-validated for the target region, and AWS-attached peripherals/USB redirection profiles may behave differently under HDP.

Integrations do not map one-for-one: AWS WorkSpaces leans on AWS Directory Service, WorkDocs, FSx, CloudTrail, IAM, and KMS, whereas Huawei Workspace integrates with Huawei IAM, CBR for backup, SFS for shared file, and CBH for bastion/audit. App remoting and persistent-user-data tooling built on AWS features must be replaced with Huawei equivalents, and verified per feature: anti-screenshot, watermarking, peripheral redirection, two-factor authentication, and behavior audit are offered by Huawei Workspace but with different configuration surfaces.

Migration to Huawei

Assess workload variants before choosing: persistent named-user desktops map to Workspace standard/Ultimate desktops; non-persistent pooled or task-worker scenarios map to Workspace desktop pools; heavy GPU/Linux dev domains may exceed Workspace's image and compute offering and need ECS-based alternatives. Inventory existing WorkSpaces bundles, images, AD, user profiles, peripheral policies, and peak concurrency, then re-spec Huawei images and flavors in the target region while checking Workspace quota and Windows licensing inclusion.

Rebuild images and directories rather than lift them: there is no AWS-to-Huawei desktop conversion or documented one-click tool, so capture application and data dependencies from each WorkSpace image, rebuild an equivalent Windows image in Huawei Cloud, and reconnect Huawei Workspace to a new AD/identity directory (recreate users and groups; federate via IAM Identity Center where applicable). Migrate user data via conventional file/object copy (e.g., to SFS or OBS) and use CBR for desktop backup; profile migration tooling must be supplied by you.

Validate access, peripherals, and security before cutover: pilot HDP client behavior for latency, USB/peripheral redirection, multi-monitor, and printer compatibility, and reconfigure policies (watermarking, anti-screenshot, clipboard, two-factor, behavior audit) under Workspace's own policy model. Run side-by-side with AWS WorkSpaces, confirm RPO/RTO via CBR backups, and plan a region-scoped DR strategy because cross-region desktop displacement is not a built-in WorkSpaces→Workspace path.

Recalculate TCO for the new model: AWS bills per-active-user hours or monthly bundles over the WorkSpaces meter, while Huawei Workspace bills per desktop monthly or hourly-hour packages with Windows licensing and disk spec-included; CBR, SFS, EIP/NAT/VPN, and CBH may add charges. Model peak concurrency, storage, network egress, and support tiers, and note that pooled-desktop pricing differs materially from named-user persistent pricing—do not assume 1:1 cost translation between AWS per-user and Huawei per-desktop metering.
