AWS Elastic Disaster Recovery

AWS Elastic Disaster Recovery (DRS) continuously replicates block-level data from physical, virtual, or cloud source servers into a lightweight AWS staging area, enabling on-demand disaster recovery with sub-second RPOs, point-in-time recovery, non-disruptive drills, failover, and failback. Unlike backup, it maintains a near-real-time warm replica and supports source-side agents for heterogeneous Windows and Linux workloads.

Differences vs Huawei

Huawei offers no single service that mirrors AWS DRS's heterogeneous source-to-cloud continuous DR. BRS (branded Storage Disaster Recovery Service in docs) performs cross-AZ and cross-region asynchronous block replication between paired Huawei ECS/EVS sites, with an RPO of seconds and one-click switchover and online drills. Its scope is limited to ECS instances on Huawei Cloud; it is not a replication receptor for arbitrary on-premises or third-party-cloud source servers the way the AWS DRS agent is.

SMS is a server migration service, not a continuous DR state. It uses an agent to do a full block/file copy from x86 Windows/Linux sources (on-prem or other clouds) to ECS, followed by incremental synchronization, and ends with a one-time cutover. Once cutover completes the source is decommissioned; there is no ongoing protection, reverse replication, failback, or point-in-time recovery, which are core DRS lifecycle operations.

Bounding differences also appear in scale and data-model surface: BRS operates through protection groups of protected instances with paired production and DR ECS instances, consuming ongoing compute at the DR site, whereas DRS keeps minimal staging resources and materializes full instances only at failover. SMS, MgC, OMS, and CBR are auxiliary, not equivalent; verification of supported OS versions, region pairing, API/CLI parity, bandwidth economics, and source-agent compatibility must precede any cutover planning.

Migration to Huawei

Defer to two workload variants. For ECS workloads already on Huawei Cloud needing site resilience, adopt BRS and map AWS DR objectives to Huawei protection groups: confirm cross-AZ or cross-region pairing availability, document RPO of seconds/RTO of minutes, and inventory protected instances and EVS disks. For on-premises or third-party-cloud workloads needing relocation to Huawei Cloud, SMS is the supported route; treat it as migration, not equivalent DR, because it lacks continuous protection after cutover.

Inventory source servers, OS and application stack, and run SMS migration feasibility checks before proceeding. Use the SMS agent over Direct Connect, VPN, or the public Internet (internet is metered egress on the source side) to perform full replication plus incremental synchronization. Validate OS distribution support (40+ Windows/Linux distributions per Huawei docs) and re-host applications without reconfiguration. Document per-instance bandwidth and cutover windows, since SMS uses block and file-level data transfer with no in-flight point-in-time recovery.

Once SMS cutover lands workloads on Huawei ECS, re-establish DR posture with BRS by creating protection groups across the destination and a secondary AZ/region, and pair it with CBR backups for image-level recovery insurance. Perform a BRS online DR drill to validate data consistency and switchover behavior without interrupting production. Confirm that the paired DR site sizing reflects peak load because BRS keeps DR-side compute provisioned for failover.

Expect material cost-model differences. Huawei BRS bills for DR-side ECS and EVS resources plus SDRS protection instance capacity during protection, plus inter-AZ or inter-region replication traffic where applicable. CBR adds backup storage and request charges. Recalculate total cost of ownership against AWS DRS staging-area plus transfer costs, accounting for sustained DR-site compute, replication traffic, retention, and interconnection. There is no automated AWS-to-Huawei DR conversion path; orchestration, runbooks, and failback must be rebuilt on Huawei primitives.
