AWS Backup
AWS Backup is a fully managed, policy-based service that centralizes backup orchestration, retention, monitoring, and restore across AWS compute, storage, and database resources through a single backup vault model. Backups are defined by backup plans, assigned via tags or resource selection, and lifecycle-managed with cross-account, cross-region copy and legal-hold controls under shared governance.

Differences vs Huawei
AWS Backup abstracts many resource types (EBS, EC2, RDS, DynamoDB, EFS, FSx, S3, Storage Gateway) behind one vault and plan API, with tag-based assignment and AWS Organizations integration for cross-account backup. Huawei splits the equivalent across CBR vaults by resource class (server, disk, SFS Turbo, file) plus dedicated database/desktop backups; CBR server backup (the successor to the legacy CSBS product) covers ECS/HECS/BMS but does not unify S3-class object or NoSQL store backup. Expect a less declarative, more resource-typed control plane and no native Organization-level policy inheritance.
AWS Backup offers backup vault lock (WORM), continuous backup and PITR for supported resources, separate cold-storage lifecycle tiers, and Backup Audit Manager via CloudTrail. Huawei CBR provides vault backup locking, cross-region replication, incremental backup and Instant Restore with minute-level RTO, ransomware protection integrated with HSS, and application-consistent backup via custom scripts for MySQL/Linux apps; however, PITR is not a general CBR feature, lifecycle tiering to cold storage is limited, and cross-account backup is not a documented capability. Architects must rebuild governance around IAM and CTS rather than AWS-style Organizations backup policies.
Scaling and operational responsibility differ: AWS Backup is serverless with throughput governed by assigned backup vault settings and service quotas, while CBR backup performance is tied to vault capacity, EVS/SFS underlying throughput, and snapshot limits per resource. Cross-region copy on AWS is a vault copy job; on Huawei it is CBR cross-region replication configured at the vault. Restore on both is resource-native, but Huawei's restore-to-new-server and image-from-backup paths lean on IMS, and restore scope is bounded by the vault's resource type rather than a single cross-resource restore API.
Migration to Huawei
Inventory every AWS Backup plan, vault, resource assignment, retention rule, copy destination, encryption context, and legal hold, then map each protected resource to a Huawei CBR vault type: ECS/HECS/BMS to a server backup vault (CBR's successor to the standalone CSBS product), EBS-equivalent EVS to a disk backup vault, EFS/FSx-equivalent SFS Turbo to an SFS Turbo backup vault, and managed databases to their native backup or GaussDB/RDS backup. Do not assume a one-to-one plan transfer; CBR assigns policies to vaults and resources individually, so re-express tag-based selection as explicit vault membership and per-resource policies.
Rebuild retention and copy policies using CBR scheduled/periodic backup policies with min retention floors, and replace AWS cross-region copy and vault lock with CBR cross-region replication plus vault backup locking where WORM behavior is required. Validate application-consistent backup with CBR's custom pre/post-freeze scripts for MySQL and Linux workloads, since AWS Backup's native app-consistency for VSS-aware resources has no blanket Huawei counterpart. Encryption moves from AWS KMS to Huawei KMS-backed vault encryption, and access control from IAM backup policies to IAM/agency scoped to CBR.
For data movement there is no direct AWS-to-Huawei backup conversion; recreate protection in CBR by provisioning vaults sized to current used capacity (GB-month billing), attaching resources, taking a full CBR backup, and running replication to the target region. For workloads needing an alternate path, combine CBR server backup with image creation via IMS for cross-region server rebuild, and treat CSBS only as the legacy name for the server backup vault now delivered under CBR. Re-test restore to new resources and recovery drills following CBR's periodic recovery-drill best practice before declaring parity.
Recalculate TCO because billing differs materially: AWS Backup charges backup storage by GB-month, restore/job processing, and cross-region data transfer, while Huawei CBR charges vault capacity (GB-month at rates that differ by vault type), backup requests, replication traffic, and underlying EVS/OBS where used. Confirm regional availability, vault quotas, and per-resource snapshot limits for each target region, and document gaps such as limited cold-tier lifecycle, no general PITR, no native cross-account backup, and reduced unified-panel breadth versus AWS Backup.
